Nasarawa State government has donated the sum of N5million to victims of the recent fire incident at the Lafia timber market.
Governor Umaru Tanko Al-Makura who made the donation on Monday during a sympathy visit to the scene of the fire incident, explained that the gesture was meant to alleviate the losses incurred by the affected traders.
“We have come to sympathise with the Timber Dealers Association over the unfortunate fire incident. I urge all of you to accept and see this incident as an act of God.”
He revealed that the state government was working towards relocating the timber market to a new site, assuring that the timber dealers would be occupying the new market acquired within the next three months.
“All necessary arrangements have been concluded and I assure you that the new market will be ready for you to occupy between now and March this year.
“As I speak to you, government has already paid compensation to owners of the new site acquired for the market and so I urge you to remain patient as everything is being done to better their business,” he restated.
The governor noted that as part of efforts to forestall the reoccurrence of the incident, the state government had awarded contract for the construction of a new fire service office in Lafia, in addition to the procurement of modern fire fighting equipments to enhance fire services across the state.
He called on the people of the state to be at alert by being more fire conscious in order to avoid unnecessary outbreaks.
Receiving the donation on behalf of the affected dealers, chairman of the Timber Dealers Association, Alhaji Yayangida appreciated the governor for the kind gesture and appealed for speedy relocation of the market to the new site.
