Nasarawa State government has restated its commitment to partner the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation towards the delivery of quality health services at the Primary Health Care level to the people of the state.
Governor Umaru Tanko Al-Makura who stated this while receiving a delegation of the foundation at the Government House Lafia at the weekend, affirmed that health and the education remained key sectors his government would continue to accord priority.
He revealed that on his assumption of office as governor of the state in 2011, the state had more than seven hundred primary health care centres, half of which he said were mere consulting clinics.
The Governor however explained that the health centres were reformed by his administration and centralised as primary health care development agency towards ensuring accountability and discipline as well as synergy with other health centres across the state.
He told the delegation that the state government was ready to embark on whatever initiative the foundation might have with regards to transforming the primary health care centres adding that the state already had a template in line with the government priority that every citizen has the opportunity to assess basic health care services.
Earlier the Director, Integrity Delivery of the foundation, Mrs. Dona Hoving explained that they were at the Government House to see to a collaboration with the Nasarawa state government in order to boost primary health care services across the thirteen local government areas of the state.
She revealed that the foundation is presently focusing its attention on primary health care development and Nasarawa state was among the pilot states for the programme.
The Director explained that the foundation had identified seven states in Nigeria as their potential partners towards developing their health centres.
The leader of the delegation further explained that their primary priorities were on poor people particularly women and children in the benefiting states.
