National chairman of the All Progressives Congress, APC, Chief John Odigie-Oyegun yesterday stated that the crisis in the National Assembly cannot consume the party.
Odigie-Oyegun, represented by the APC national vice chairman, South-South, Hilliard Itah, spoke at the inauguration of the Coalition of APC South-South group.
The APC national chairman, who spoke at the national secretariat of the party, stated that those who were expecting the crisis to consume APC would wait for eternity.
He said, “What is going on in the National Assembly is nothing but politics. Those who believe that this is the beginning of the end of the APC, should be prepared to wait for a long time, as the party will live from one dispensation to another. The APC will be here to give good governance to the people of Nigeria.
“The truth is that most of us are in politics because of enlightened self-interest, others may may have a different view. But one of the vital ingredients of politics is contest and so there are offices to be contested for in the National Assembly. We should always expect this kind of situation to happen if the party has internal democratic principles in its operations.”
He said the difference between APC and the PDP was that the engineering of leadership had never been given to the people.
“It has all been packaged and sent to them. Nigerians have been accustomed to this kind of politics but APC has come to change all that. So it does not seemed to us as if there is deal amiss. In other climes what is happening in the National Assembly is what takes place when offices are contested for.
“The situation at the National Assembly has given a lot of members of the APC some sleepless nights. Let me use this opportunity to tell each and every one of you that what is going on in the National Assembly is mere politics. It is nothing other than politics. Those who believe that this is the beginning of the end of APC have a very long time to wait. For indeed, dispensations after dispensations, the APC will be here to give good governance to the people of Nigeria.
“So, I want to appeal to the practitioners of the 4th estate of the realm that they should not make a mountain out of a mole hill, and if I may borrow the cliche, ‘that nothing of the sort as being speculated by the PDP is happening in the APC. The APC is not going to unravel; the APC is going to be solid decades from now.
“Let me tell you the recent trajectory of the PDP. When we were about going into the merger, their position was that of unbelief. When we went into election and we had the unprecedented support of the people, their position was that of hate. Today, their position is that of anger. They are reacting out of anger. So some of us who are discerning enough to know this, we can only in the confines of our room laugh at them, because they took Nigerians for granted for sixteen years, and they think by being angry they will take back power.”
