Nigerian Navy Forwarding Operating Base, FOB, in Bonny, Rivers State, has arrested seven men suspected to be sea pirates.
Sea piracy has been a problem to commuters in the riverine communities especially those involved in sea transport in Rivers State.
According to naval authorities, the suspected sea pirates had been carrying out nefarious operations on the Bonny-Port Harcourt waterways.
Handing over the suspects to the Nigeria Police in Bonny, the base commanding officer, Navy Captain Hassan Dogara said the suspects were arrested while robbing crew of a vessel, MT Annah.
According to Dogara, items recovered from the suspects include two AK47 rifles, 90 rounds of ammunition, nine GSM phones and the sum of N5, 800.
Receiving the suspects on behalf of the Nigeria Police, Inspector Nicholas Gbaralel of the Bonny Police Station assured that the suspects would be prosecuted accordingly.
Meanwhile, when interviewed by newsmen, the suspects denied committing the crime, claiming they were ship workers.
