National Broadcasting Commission, NBC at the weekend commended 157 broadcasting stations in the country for the high level of professionalism demonstrated during the March 28 Presidential and National Assembly elections.
A statement signed by the commission’s Director/Head, Public Affairs, Alhaji Awwalu Salihu in Abuja said the stations are made of 141 radio stations and 16 television stations across the country.
“These stations have demonstrated high level of professionalism, showing balanced and richness in their political discussions and voter education programmes”, it stated.
It said recommendations from the 10 zonal offices of the commission showed that Channels Television in all its locations performed exceptionally well by being balanced and fair to all parties and contestants.
The statement said that Nigeria Info also operating in several locations led other radio stations in balance and fairness to all parties and candidates in its coverage of the elections.
“The breakdown by zones showed that in Enugu/Sokoto zones, nine stations each, performed very well, while eight stations each did well in Abuja, Uyo and Lagos zones.
“Also, seven stations did well each in Kaduna and Ibadan zones, 10 stations were also commended in Benin zone and two in Maiduguri zone”, it stated.
The statement noted that the zonal reports indicated that private broadcasting stations were largely more balanced in their reportage than the government-owned stations.
It urged all broadcast stations to imbibe the ethics of the profession, especially in areas of balance and fairness during campaigns.
The statement listed the stations that exhibit high level of professionalism during the elections as Sokoto zone: Rema TV, Equity TV, Kebbi TV, Gamji TV, Sokoto Broadcasting Corporation, Equity FM, Radio Zamfara AM and Pride FM.
Also included are Channels TV, Nigeria Info, FRCN, Search FM, Kwara Radio, Royal FM, Grace FM and Tao FM are the others from Abuja zone.
The statement said that in Enugu zone Dream FM, Solid FM, FRCN, Magic FM, Radio Odenigbo, Radio Spientia and Minaj Radio performed well.
In Uyo zone are Planet FM, Radio Port Harcourt, Cool FM, Wazobia FM, CRBC Radio, Glory FM and Royal FM stations while Freedom Radio, Wazobia FM, Companion FM, Nagarta FM, FRCN, Jigawa FM and Rahama FM are those listed from Kaduna zone.
The statement listed stations in Lagos zone as Channels TV, TV Continental, Lagos TV, Nigeria Info, Radio Continental, Eko FM and City FM.
In Ibadan zone are Galaxy FM, MITV, OGTV, Splash FM, OGBC Radio, Premier FM and Space FM, while Gotel Communication in Yola also received commendation.
The statement also lauded the following stations in Benin zone: Channels, Silver Bird, DBCTV/Radio, KU FM, Vibes FM, Rhythm FM, Orange FM, Radio Nigeria Positive FM and Crown FM.
