Leadership of the Nigeria Cricket Federation, NCF are currently weighing options available ahead of this year’s International Cricket Council, ICC World Cricket league Division five scheduled for next month in Jersey Island, United Kingdom following cash hitches that has greeted Nigerian male Cricket team preparations.
As at last check by Nigerian Pilot Sports, the Ministry of Youth and Sports Development led by Minister Solomon Dalung has approved a paltry sum of N7 million out of initial N26 million requested by NCF for the crucial tournament.
Further investigations by our Reporter revealed that lack of adequate funding from government has dealt a big blow on Nigerian Sports in recent times especially on Cricket with large financial generating means.
However, NCF President, Emeka Onyeama has remained optimistic of Nigeria’s chances of advancing to Division four league this time around. Nigeria, Africa’s most populous Nation alongside Tanzania are the only African countries listed for 2016 Division five battle.
Other countries that will do battle at Jersey Island include Vanuatu, Oman, Guernsey and host Jersey.
The Nigerian side was scheduled to depart tomorrow but that arrangement has been punctured due to financial hard times.
Onyeama who led Nigerian team two years ago to take part at the competition said; “the team has gained a lot of experience. We have introduced new People to adopt new playing format. With the experience of our new technical director, we are determined to earn division four spot.
“Some of the countries we will face including Tanzania are familiar foes. That will give us an idea of what to do better. Our players have been in camp since January perfecting strategy before they will leave March 10.”
Ahead of the competition, the Services of My Shrinam Reganathan, a Level A Coach certified by the Board of Control for Cricket India, BCCI have been employed.
Mr Shrinam’s appointment was confirmed with an Memoranda of Understanding agreed and signed by the Federal Ministry of Youth and Sports, the Nigeria Cricket Federation and Mr Shirinam which clearly states the terms and reference for which his duties shall be carried out.
