Ahead of the inauguration of the 8th National Assembly, Igbo youths under the umbrella of Nd’Igbo Youth Organisation has joined the league of those agitating for a free and open process in electing the leadership of the Assembly.
Spokesman of the group, Prince Igwe Ude-Umante in a statement issued in Abuja yesterday and made available to our correspondent, argued that the desire to have national spread in the leadership arrangement which prompted zoning in the nascent stage of our democracy has since become obsolete.
“Though we acknowledge the imperative of having national spread in the composition of principal officers in the National Assembly at the nascent stage of our democracy, it has now become obsolete with the maturity of our democracy. Particularly, since the election of Rt. Hon. Waziri Aminu Tambuwal as Speaker of the 7th Assembly, and his deputy, Rt. Hon. Emeka Ihedioha, against the zoning arrangement, the idea of sticking to zoning has become somewhat useless to progressive Nigerians.
“In a show of uncommon courage and display of rare progressive activism, the patriots of the 7th Assembly in the House of Representatives settled for Rt. Hon. Tambuwal and Rt. Hon. Ihedioha of North-West and South-East respectively. The leadership under the duo remain at the golden side of Nigeria and indeed African leadership records”, the statement noted.
The group therefore appealed to All Progressives Congress, APC, to throw the contest open for the best hands to emerge. It further questions how national spread will be achieved when no position has been zoned to the South-East.
“If anybody is over-emphasising fairness; our position is that the ranking and majority rule should be stepped down for South East to take up the Senate Presidency or Speakership of the House of Representatives. Anything short of this is neither equity nor fairness in the way that the apostles of zoning are interpreting the issue.
“This is one way the APC will prove to Nigerians that it is here to change the way we run our country, play politics and indeed the old way of retrogressive and reactive governance”, the group said.
