Victims of the bomb blasts that rocked Gombe Central Market as well those affected by flood disaster, windstorm on Saturday received relief materials worth millions of Naira from the National Emergency Management Agency, NEMA.
Mallam Saidu Ahmed Minin, Head of NEMA Operations Office in Gombe made presentation of the materials to some leaders among those affected by the various ill-fated incidents.
He said the beneficiaries were victims of the twin bomb explosions at the Gombe Central Market, the windstorm victims in Dukku local government and the flood disaster victims at Wuro-Dole village in Akko local government of the state.
He said the assistance was based on the findings of the impact assessment exercise conducted by the agency and Gombe State Emergency Management Agency, SEMA to determine the extent of damages, number of households and number of victims affected.
He said the victims were over a hundred and that the materials would be distributed directly to every victim captured in their records.
Mallam Muhammed Giwa from Dukku who responded on behalf of the beneficiaries thanked the Federal Government for responding to their plight and ensuring direct distribution of the relief materials.
NEMA and the Gombe State Emergency Management Agency, SEMA, made a symbolic presentation to the representatives of the disaster affected communities in Gombe and pledged that all victims would get theirs directly from the agencies.
Dr. Danlami Arabs Rukuje, the Executive Secretary of SEMA said: “Despite the fact that human beings had no control over the weather, natural disasters could be prevented”.
He said natural disasters was preventable if precautionary measures like planting of trees, not building on waterways are taken and people heed early warning by relevant agencies of government.
Dr. Rukuje said the need for wood as a source of fuel was understandable but people should always plant trees in place of the ones they fell.
He said: “Even as a farmer where you have to farm to make a living, you can surround the boundaries of your farm with trees. They will serve both as windbreaks and proper boundary demarcation.”
