National Environmental Standards and Regulations Enforcement Agency, NESREA,has sealed off three Base Transceiver Stations, BTS, belonging to a communication outfit in Ofatedo, Egbedore and Osogbo Local Government Area of Osun State.‬
Supervising the exercise yesterday, the Director General of NESREA, Dr. Lawrence Anukam, said the facilities were sealed off due to non-compliance with the provisions of Environmental Impact Assessment, EIA Act.
The DG who was represented by Mr. Kolawole Gbenga and other staff of the headquarters field office of the agency noted that the facilities were sealed off because the operator could not present the Environmental Impact Statement and Certificate duly issued by the Federal Ministry of Environment despite several notification letters issued to them for compliance.‬
‪Dr. Anukam noted that the company ignored early notices issued to it by November, 2014 when the sites were still at construction stage, urging communication outfit to always comply with the agency regulations guidelines.
‪He also visited a gold mining site at Iwara in Atakumosa East Local Government Area to examine the level of compliance of the exploration company to the environmental policies of the agency.
The DG directed the operator of the company to ensure conduct of EIA before commencement of exploitation activities at the site.‬
‪He warned the operator not to tamper with the seals until the reasons for the enforcement action have been resolved.
