New vice chancellor of the University of Uyo, Prof. Enefiok Essien has promised to sustain the academic standards, policies and other developments that the institution has excelled in in recent times.
Essien stated this while taking over from the out-gone VC, Prof. Comfort Ekpo, at the main campus of the university in Uyo yesterday.
The new VC, who is a professor of Commercial Law, said that achieving this would demand all hands to be on deck irrespective of their position for the next five years.
He said that he would welcome all constructive advice from all to enable him sustain and improve on the ranking the institution had recorded nationally and internationally in recent times.
He said that staff and students’ welfare would be given the needed attention for peace to continue to reign on campus.
He called for cooperation of all so that the institution would
continue to be sought for in the country.
“No man is an island; I cannot play God. Whatever problem that is identified should be brought up politely so that we put heads together to resolve it amicably.
“The past administration has raised the standard of this institution; we must work hard to add value, by God’s grace, I will work to add value by taking everybody along for the purpose of development.
“The students must be made to be happy because without them there is no university,” Essien said.
Earlier, Prof. Ekpo described the handing over ceremony as a relay race, noting that she had handed over to Essien the same way she collected the baton from Prof. Akaneren Essien five years ago.
Ekpo expressed joy that the selection process was peaceful, transparent and devoid of rancour and bad blood.
“Prof. Essien is God’s choice for the institution. Everybody should support him,” she said.
Highlight of the ceremony was the symbolic replacement of the picture of Ekpo with that of the new VC.
