The Beacon Youth Initiative, a Non-Governmental Organisation, NGO, has donated a motorised borehole to Hayin-Gada community of Gudi in Akwanga local government area of Nasarawa State to ensure availability of portable drinking water.
Executive director of the NGO, Mr Envoh Okolo Emmanuel, who inaugurated the borehole drilled at a deepest depth of 65.5 meters with all the equipment of standard quality yesterday, explained that the gesture was also meant to prevent the community from further outbreak of cholera disease in the area.
Nigerian Pilot recalls that the Hayin-Gada community, last year, recorded an outbreak of cholera which devastated the community with resultant deaths prompting the NGO to intervene by providing the community with the motorised borehole.
“Drilling of the borehole we are donating today was envisioned out of passion as an anonymous young lady, who was touched by the scarcity of water and the resultant deaths caused due to water-borne diseases, approached the NGO for intervention.”
He urged the community to take good care of the facility as, according to him, “the facility is not for commercial purpose and has no religious or political leanings to it.”
Responding, district head of the community, Alhaji Sule Bawa, commended the NGO for the benevolent gesture, describing the facility as the first of its kind in the over 100 years existence of the community.
He assured that the facility will be judiciously used to enhance healthy living of members of the community and beyond.
