As Kogi State gubernatorial election draws closer, a non-governmental organisation, NGO, under the aegis of Young Stars Development Initiative, YDI, has embarked up a campaign, tagged, “Vote, not Fight, Election, not War” in the state, ahead of the November governorship election.
2face Foundation and Young Stars Development Initiative YDI originally launched the “Vote not fight” campaign in October 2014 before the March 2015 general elections.
The foundation was officially launched yesterday in Lokoja by the collaboration of
National Democratic Institute, NDI, 2Face Foundation and Centre for Human Rights and Conflicts Resolution to ensure a violence-free governorship election in the state.
At the launching, the founder and popular musician, Innocent Idibia appealed to youths not to engage themselves in violence before, during and after the Kogi State governorship election, noting that violence would only enhances the chances of an undertaker that has the means to sponsor violent action against candidates with genuine intention and programmes for youths.
He advised the youth to reject the move by any politician to use them to cause mayhem in the state, saying that under no circumstances should the youth allow themselves to be used as thugs for any politician to prosecute his or her selfish agenda.
NDI Senior Programme, Citizen for Participation, Mr. Machill Manidu Maxiwell, who spoke at the occasion, said that the slogan” Vote, not fight, Election, No Be War” encourages youth to be peaceful during the election.
“The Campaign is focused on the Nigerian youth and upholds the belief that Nigeria’s greatest resource for its future development is its youthful population”, he said.
The Resident Electoral Commissioner of Independent National Electoral Commission INEC, Alhaji Halilu Hussien Pai, appealed to other stakeholders to join in the campaign against violence in the forthcoming election, noting that INEC cannot do it alone.
The REC, who was represented by the Head of Voters Education, Mr Daniel Kure called upon youths in the state not to allow themselves to be used as thugs by politicians in the governorship election in the state.
