Executive Secretary of National Human Right Commission, NHRC, Prof. Bem Angwe, has frowned at the way the elderly are being treated in the society.
Speaking at the 2015 International Day for Older Persons, in Abuja, he lamented that the elderly who supposed to be useful to the society due to their wealthy experience in building the culture of the society are being disregarded.
“It is therefore our delight to note that this year’s theme, “Sustainability and Age Inclusiveness in Urban Environment” focuses on the germane issues that must be addressed to give the older persons enough latitude to actualize their rights in the society. It is quite ironical that the older persons who are required in the society for their wealth of experience in building the culture of an organized society are the same people being treated with disdain”.
He urged governments to buy into the new order of mainstreaming the rights of the older persons in the society, by encouraging people to discard lifestyle and practices that diminish the status, roles and privileges of older persons and replace them with principles and policies that will add value to the lives of the elderly.
Prof. Angwe stressed that the commission is concerned about the plight of older persons, saying that the commission has met with the stakeholders to the development of a Draft National Policy on Ageing.
“We have engaged stakeholders who share our concerns in pressing for the actualization of the rights of the older persons in the society that led to the development of a Draft National Policy on Ageing. In the course of our engagements and discussions with these older persons and other stakeholders, we discovered efforts made in the past to address these issues fail because of absence of a national policy on the matter,” he said and solicited for change of attitude towards the rights-based approach to older persons.
He advocated for increase in the visibility of older persons, abolition of ageism and age discrimination, clear responsibilities towards older persons and introduction of geriatric care in all our public and private health care facilities.
