…as countries storm Abuja

Nigeria has filed a bid to host the African Union Sports Council Region 2 Secretariat consisting countries in the West African subregion.
Minister of Youth and Sports Development, Solomon Dalong announced the bid while addressing delegates to a Strategic Workshop of the African Union Sports Council, AUSC Region 2, held in Abuja at the weekend.
He said that Abuja hosting of the Secretariat would ensure synergy with Secretariat of other sub regional bodies like ECOWAS which is already domiciled in Abuja.
The AUSC replaced the Supreme Council For Sports in Africa, SCSA, which was scrapped in July this by AU Sports ministers.
Dalong urged the participants to come up with strategies that will ensure that ECOWAS sustains its number one spot in sports in the African continent.
Also speaking at the occasion, Machacha Shependa, Head of Sports AU Commission highlighted some of challenges Africa must surmount to be able to attain its potential deployment of sports for development.
While expressing appreciation of the AUC for role role of sub-region in helping build African sports architecture through the creation of ECOWAS games and other sub regional games, Shependa noted sadly that little appreciation has not been shown to sports as a profession, hence the poor sponsorship it attracts.
” There is lack of good governance, integrity, transparency and accountability in many sports associations in Africa, riding on autonomy given them by international sports federations., and yet in Africa sports, development is solely funded by Governments” he stated.
