Following recent coordinated attacks in parts of Paris by international terror network, ISIS, which culminated in the death of about 130 innocent citizens, the Director of Military Intelligence of the France Ministry of Defence, Gen. Christophe Gormet, and Nigeria’s Chief of Defence Intelligence, AVM Monday Morgan have been meeting to discuss Boko Haram links with ISIS.
Nigerian Pilot gathered that the meeting, which took place in Abuja, Nigeria, was basically to discuss the issue of Boko Haram and intelligence gathering to counter them.
The two defence chiefs also discussed deployment of the troops of the Multi National Joint Task Force, following a request by Nigeria asking France to prevail on their former colonies to give the deserved attention to the joint task force.
General Gormet, who is visiting Nigeria for the first time, said he was aware of the training of 13 Nigerian military operatives in geo spatial intelligence in Strasbourg, France.
Morgan, while recalling Nigeria’s military visit to Dakar, Senegal, where the French was requested to encourage the Francophone countries to intensify campaign against the Boko Haram, noted that the visit culminated in yesterday’s meeting aimed at collaborating efforts to end Boko Haram onslaught.
Morgan also noted that diplomatic relations between Nigeria and France became stronger after President Muhammadu Buhari’s visit to France last September, stressing that the military was making arrangements to set up a geo-spatial intelligent unit to combat the insurgency.
According to him, the military will require expertise of developed countries to be able to set up the planned department, and that countries must devise effective ways of tackling the scourge of international terrorism facing the international community.
Morgan said, “I want to refer you back to the visit of President Buhari to France early this year; that brought about the serious synergy that we have today between the French government and Nigeria in terms of intelligence sharing. I want to assure you that your visit is highly welcome. I have had a follow up visit with you to Paris after the President visited Paris.
“You also invited me to the Chief of Defense Staff’s visit to Senegal which was very fruitful; we spoke on very serious bilateral issues on the need to encourage our Francophone neighbours to give us the neccesary support to defeat Boko Haram. We think that from onward, daily intelligence sharing will keep happening and this will effectively change the situation in the North-East.”
