Sports Minister, Solomon Dalung has said that Nigerians should expect five medal from Team Nigeria at the 2016 Olympic Games due to commence next month in Rio, Brazil.
T o achieve this, the minister called on all Nigerians to support the Nigeria Olympic Committee, NOC who are determined to ensure that the team performs well during the games.
Dalung said that President Muhammadu Buhari will on July 19 l officially hand over Team Nigeria to NOC in a gala dinner and that the investiture of the President as the grand patron of NOC at the Banquest hall of the presidential Villa.
‘’I would like to humbly take this opportunity to urge all Nigerians who have not yet, to support the NOC and the Gala Committee in its endeavours to develop sports as a catalyst for change and development with Nigeria.
He said that the vision of the event is to assist the NOC in the quest to provide Nigerians athletes with better opportunities, resources and financial aid in order to achieve competitive excellence and sports success.
The minister said the federal government is committed toward Team Nigeria going to the games and doing well and to the end, hinted that President Buhari has approved and directed that the N500 million budget for the 9Olypic games be released.
Besides, the Sports ministry have requested for more funds from the federal government because the N500 million would be insufficient to prosecute the games. He noted that the NOC will be needing about N2 billion for the games.
Meanwhile, President of the Nigeria Olympic Committee, Habu Gumel said NOC has received $103, 000 from the IOC to prepare the athletes for the Rio Olympic Games even as he said that scholarship have also come from ANOCA.
