Ahead of this year’s All Africa Games, AAG, the Nigerian badminton team have expressed deep concern over the inability of National Sports Commission, NSC to approve any oversee test game as a way of getting adequately prepared.
Team badminton at the last AAG held in Maputo, Mozambique grabbed three gold a silver and bronze medals.
And despite their resolve to surpass previous performance, NSC DG Alhassan Yakmut had declared that the commission won’t take charge of any training tour outside Nigeria.
One of the foremost badminton players, Ephraim Jimkan told Nigerian Pilot sports that already his teammates who have spent close to one month are ready to make use the best option available before heading to Brazzaville in Congo DR.
According to him, “this one of the tournament which determines who is the lion of Africa. I and my teammates are ready. Sports commission are trying but the only problem we have is on part of sponsorship which should give you confidence to play.
“Is not proper to just train and enter a tournament such as All Africa Games and play without any pre-tournament. As a player, if you go for pre-tournament, it will help to put you in proper shape whether you win or lose.
“How will they expect us to train, train and train and go out to give our best at the tournament proper. I don’t think there any training tour or something related to that. The players’ mind set is ready, what remain is for the organisers to do right thing.
On his part, captain of the team, Olaoluwa Fagbemi applauded the feeding and accommodation arrangement adding “the preparation is not bad. At least, we have the shuttle and other equipment to train in camp for now.”
