Chairman Bauchi state Chapter of the Nigeria Labour Congress, NLC, Comrade Hashimu Muhammad Gital says that Nigerians are not only poor, but helpless as government at all levels have since ceased to be service providers but extortionists.
This remark was made by the Chairman yesterday during the May Day celebration held at Abubakar Tafawa Balewa Stadium Bauchi, where he said our leaders and rulers are today the source of our anguish and our children reduced to orphans even in our lifetimes.
He called on the state government to do everything possible to ensure that all outstanding salaries and entitlements of workers are paid before May 29th to enable a smooth and seamless transition to the in-coming administration, saying that there is need for the government to also pay the disengaged and engaged teachers working under the state Universal Education Board, SUBEB.
Also speaking, Governor Isa Yuguda represented by the Head of Civil Service, Bauchi state, Mr. Abdon Dalla Gin said the state government had recorded over 118 interventions in the civil service primarily done in order to propel workers to greater performance towards the effective implementation of government policies and programmes despite the ever- dwindling resources from the Federation Account.
He called on workers of the state to follow the footsteps of those past labour leaders whose sacrifices led to what we used to celebrate during May Day events, saying the nation’s history cannot be complete without the mention of the vital roles played by some labour leaders and veteran politicians whose collective efforts led to the actualisation of political independence from British colonials in the year 1960.
He appealed to the leadership of Labour in the state to continue to educate their colleagues to cooperate with the government in the implementation of policies and programmes for the good people of the state, most especially as a new administration is coming on stream on 29th May this year. He thanked workers in the state for their support and cooperation with state government during the last 8 years and prayed that they would extend same gesture to the incoming administration.
Speaking earlier, the Head of service, Mr Abdon Dalla Gin represented by the Permanent Secretary General Administration, Alhaji Ahmed Saleh Jarmajo congratulated the Buchi NLC for having a peaceful election of new officers; hoping that they will give good leadership to the workers of the state.
