Nigerians have been charged to partner with the police and other security agencies in order to have well secured environment.
The Lagos State’s Deputy Commissioner of Police in-Charge of Operations, Mr. Fimihan Adeoye, gave the advice during a security and Peace meeting organised by concerned residents of Apapa Road, Ebute-metta in Lagos Mainland Local Government Area, Lagos on Sunday.
DC Fimihan told the gathering not to see security as a job of police or security agencies alone, but as a job of everyone in the society.
He said: “security is expensive and it is not possible for the government to protect you beyond how you want to be protected.
“Though, the government and its agencies can only ensure your security how you want it.
“I advice you to invest in security to enjoy the good life, and this can only be achieved by being truthful and courageous to report those behind crimes in your environment to security agency.”
Also speaking at the meeting, the Divisional Police Officer of Iponrin Police Division, Mr. Adepoju A. O. a Chief Superintendent of Police, criticized residents of the community for shielding those behind crimes in the area.
CSP Adepoju attributed high crimes rate in the community to non cooperation of the residents with the police and other security agencies.
He said: “the police need your cooperation to give you best security that you want. Police are not magicians. If the residents are determined to partner with the police by giving useful information and other things they will be well policed.”
Also speaking at the meeting, the community’s representative at lower chamber of the National Assembly, the House of Representative, Mr. Jide Jimoh, while commending the organizers of the meeting, called on all the residents of the community to support the police and security agencies in their bid to ensure that sanctity is restored.
Jimoh said all must be alive to the course and play their parts in ensuing that their community is secured for both social and economic activities.
He promised that as the community’s representative at the National Assembly, he will always supports any course that will bring peace and security of lives and properties in the community which he said was once a pride of the Lagos State.
The convener of the summit, Mr. Seun Williams, in his opening remark said the summit was as a result of insecurity that had bedevilled the community in recent times.
Williams who described security as everyone’s business, also stated that in a bid to ensure that the menace is curtailed, the community has provided two patrol vans to be used by the police and the community’s Vigilante Group of Nigeria, VGN.
He therefore called on residents of the area to partner with the security agency and report any suspicious faces and objects.
The highlight of the meeting was handing over of a patrol vans which was refurbished by the concerned residents of the community to the DPO of Iponrin Police Division, CSP Adepoju by chairman of Police Community Relations Committee, PCRC, Mr. Akibu Bankole.
Other dignitaries at the meeting include, the Executive Secretary of Lagos Mainland LGA, Mrs. Omolola Essien, and traditional rulers.
