President Muhhammadu Buhari yesterday declared that Nigerian youths were yet to benefit from the country’s wealth. He also identified unsuitable curricula and improper qualifications awarded to the youths as the major reasons for unemployment in the country.
The President stated this yesterday in the Presidential Villa when he addressed the youths on the occasion of International Youths Day.
Buhari however restated his determination to ensure the creation of an enabling environment for the private sector to thrive so as to ensure greater opportunities for job creation for the teeming unemployed youths in the country.
He said: “It is worth noting that although educational attainment by Nigerian young people has increased significantly in the last decade, the relevance of curricula, quality of education and the fit with skills required by the job market, still remains a challenge for us as a country.
Unsuitable qualifications limit our young peoples’ employment prospects and potential to contribute to national development. Our new administration is poised to providing an enabling environment for the private sector to thrive so as to ensure greater opportunities for jobs to be created for our young people.”
The President however praised the youths for their contributions to the peaceful conduct of the 2015 general elections saying they played notable roles in making the change of baton possible.
The President said that he was very concerned, however, that economic growth in Nigeria has not translated into “commensurate and improved social outcomes, especially for our 60million young people who make up the majority of the population”.
He said that his government was also determined to provide adequate infrastructure to boost the ability of “our job creation institutions to increase opportunities for our young people.”
Apart from paying special attention to the growth of small and medium scale enterprises, the President said that his administration will also explore the option of boosting intervention funds to encourage domestic industrialization and manufacturing.
Buhari reaffirmed the commitment of the All Progressives Congress, APC, administration to fulfilling its campaign promises to Nigerian youths.
