Director General, Federal Radio Corporation of Nigeria, FRCN, Dr. Ladan Salihu, has said that no musician in Nigeria has attained the peace medal recognition except the late Adamu Wayya popularly known as Dan Maraya Jos.
The FRCN boss stated this during the condolence visit of the organisation to the family of the deceased at the weekend in Jos.
He said Dan Maraya was an illustrious son, philosopher and a rare breed musician whose music touched the fabric of the Nigerian society.
‘’ Dan Marayan Jos utilised his music in uplifting not only the spirit of the people but upheld the norms and values of the Nigerian social life,’’ he said.
Salihu said the late musician had a cordial relationship of more than two decades with FRCN and other radio and television stations across the country.
The FRCN Boss noted that in spite of the late musician’s affluence and international recognition, he still lived a modest life helping the less privileged especially the orphans.
‘’ He lived a modest life helping the needy especially the orphans, he will be missed by these people especially during this Ramadan period where they usually come to break their fast.
‘’ As an organisation, we donate the sum of N150, 000 to help sustain his kind gesture during the Ramadan fast ’’ he said.
In his response, Sa’idu Mohammed, the brother of the deceased expressed joy on the overwhelming condolence extended to them by FRCN, Plateau government and other groups nationwide.
He said the gesture illustrated that Dan Maraya left a legacy and urged all musicians to emulate him in using their music to preach peace and unity.
Mohammed however expressed worry that various media organisations published reports of the late musician without consulting the family of his real age which he gave as 83.
It could be recalled that Dan Maraya Jos died at 83 on June 20 after a protracted illness. He received various awards including the United Nation Peace medal recognition and an honorary doctorate degree from University of Jos.
