North-Central caucus in the House of Representatives yesterday endorsed the candidature of Honourable Yakubu Dogara for the speakership position.
Dogara, a lawmaker from Bauchi state, is one of the aspirants from the North-East zone, who wants to succeed Hon Aminu Tambuwal as the next Speaker in the Green Chamber.
There are also two other aspirants for the speakership position from the North East zone. They are: Hon Lawan Goni (Yobe) and Tahir Monguno (Borno).
In a press statement jointly signed by a group of serving and elected members, the caucus said members from the six states of the region and the Federal Capital Territory had resolved to give Dogara “bloc vote” next month when the House will be inaugurated.
The caucus said they were delighted with his aspiration being driven by selfless service and the desire to consolidate on the gains of the 7th Assembly.
They also argued that since he took over the leadership of the House services and welfare committee in the 6th Assembly, Dogara had been exemplary in the running of the committee.
According to the statement, “The North Central zonal caucus of the House of Representatives hereby announces its endorsement of Hon. Yakubu Dogara as Speaker of the House in the 8th Assembly.
“We have resolved to deliver bloc votes to Dogara during the election and ensure that we further canvass for votes and support for him from other zones.
“We are pleased with his aspiration which is motivated by selfless service, the desire to consolidate on the gains of the 7th Assembly recorded under the leadership of Speaker Aminu Waziri Tambuwal from 2011 to date.
“We must strive hard to sustain and consolidate on the giant strides made by the Tambuwal leadership and that is why only personalities like Dogara have the capacity to lead the next Assembly.
“His legal background of 22 years experience, composure, humility and intellect readily comes to mind.
“Since he took over the leadership of the House Services and Welfare Committee in the 6th Assembly, Dogara has been exemplary in the running of the committee.
“We also urge all well-meaning Nigerians to support this project as Nigeria needs credible people to help President-elect, General Muhammadu Buhari to succeed in effecting the much needed change in our polity.
“The level of independence and autonomy gained by the House in the 7th Assembly must be sustained in order to deepen democracy and strengthen the institution of the legislature.
“We are therefore fully in support of the 8th Assembly Consolidation Project of Hon. Yakubu Dogora as it is the surest way towards enthroning visionary, purposeful, courageous and credible leadership in the next assembly.”
The caucus members are: Hon. Herman Hembe (Benue); Hon. Zaphaniah Jisalo (FCT); Hon. Umar Bago (Niger); Hon. Samson Okwu (Benue), and Hon. Umar Buba Jibril (Kogi).
Others include: Hon. Zakari Mohammed (Kwara); Hon. Davematics Ombugado (Nasarawa) and Hon. Golu Thimothy (Plateau).
