Irked by the unabated insecurity that has ravaged the region, the Northern States Governors Forum said it is setting up a committee of Attorney-Generals of the Northern states to look into issue of criminal justice system and taking into cognizance the current security challenges in order to proffer strict punishments to crimes such as terrorism, kidnapping, cattle rustling, rape and domestic violence.
This was as it called on the Federal Government to recruit more security personnel to enhance their capacity to cope with various security challenges.
In a communique signed by the Forum’s Chairman, Alhaji Kashim Shettima, said they lamented the alarming rate of insecurity in the region characterized by kidnapping, cattle rustling and sporadic killings of law abiding citizens in cold blood by insurgents and bandits.
The Forum said it is taking comprehensive and holistic approaches covering all strata of society to address the issue, adding that such approaches ranging from youth unemployment, education, infrastructural facilities and power supply.
The communiqué pleaded with northerners to give them the benefit of the doubt saying “you will see a paradigm shift in our attitudinal disposition as leaders and our people will reap a bountiful harvest in the coming years and months. We dwelt on security because security is absolutely essential for us to move forward,” he stated.
“The forum resolved to partner with the National Primary Health Care Development Agency with a view to improving Primary Health Care Delivery in the North. It also resolved to have Primary Health Care Delivery under one roof in the North.”
“The Forum agreed to have bilateral and multilateral cooperation with organizations and international institutions in order to explore the opportunity of reviving textiles industries in the region,” the communiqué said on health and textiles industries.
On New Nigerian Development Company, NNDC, the governors resolved that, “The forum resolved as follows: that the company needs to be recapitalized to a profit oriented industry,” it said adding that it would be
a breeding ground for young professionals of Northern extraction.
It further resolved that the Secretaries to the Northern State Governments should carry out an in-depth study on the New Nigerian Newspapers, NNN, and present a report for consideration at the next meeting of the forum.
