SOCIAL Democratic Party, SDP, has warned both the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC , and President Muhammadu Buhari against introducing unholy antics and manipulative strategies to subvert the will of Ondo people in the forthcoming gubernatorial election in the state. The party, which says that it is poised to take advantage of the ongoing wrangling in the rank and files of the Ondo State chapter of the APC and the division in the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, that is currently governing the state, warned the APC in particular against deploying so-called federal might to attempt to manipulate the November exercise, warning that any such untoward acts could upset the fragile peace in the state. Speaking for the party at the National Secretariat, governorship candidate, Dr. Olu Agunloye, said that it was the resolve of the SDP in Ondo State to resist malevolent electoral antics of the APC which have become common place in recent elections. “The Presidency must not mess with Ondo State. The APC must not mess with the governorship election in Ondo State because Ondo State is the hub of the South West. Whatever happens in Ondo will affect the stability or otherwise of the entire South West. “APC can’t mess up with Ondo State because Ondo State is the livewire of the South West and whatever disturbs the fragile peace of the state, will have severe repercussion on the entire South West region,” he said, stressing that the ruling party in recent elections had thrown up all sorts of manipulative antics against the will of the electorate.
Further, the SDP urged the APC and its foot soldiers, who it claimed had in the past indulged in unholy electoral actions, to learn vital lessons from the past where those that attempted to introduce and impose immoral election attitudes got their fingers burnt. “The ruling APC (federal government) can’t mess with Ondo State in the forthcoming governorship elections. They should learn from the past. Those who attempted to mess up the will of the people of Ondo State got their fingers burnt,” he warned, noting that the people are determined to effect change of leadership by electing a leader with integrity. The SDP boasted that it was making serious inroad into the consciousness of Ondo people who are tired of being subjected to abject poverty in the face of abundant natural resources begging for exploitation. “We have gone round the state and have seen glaring poverty everywhere that we had visited. The people are fed up with poor leadership, they don’t want to be manipulated from Osun State neither do they want to be dictated to by Lagos. They yearn for credible leadership that has integrity and boast of proven records of performance,” he said as he briefed the national officers about the recently concluded peaceful gubernatorial primaries held in Akure, the state capital. Agunloye said it was obvious which party was not only on ground, but truly people-oriented and properly organised, stressing that unlike others that had never held their gubernatorial primaries in the state, the SDP successfully conducted a peaceful primaries ironically same day the secretariat of the APC was shutdown and their primaries conducted outside the state
