Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps, NSCDC, has said it did not maltreat anyone at the Corps Headquarters in Gombe as alleged by some citizens.
NSCDC Commandant in Gombe State, Mr. Shem Obafaye spoke in Gombe on Monday while reacting to the allegations of brutality and assault by his men.
He said it was a simple misunderstanding over parking space between the Command’s Deputy Commandant on Administration, Sanusi Mohammed Bello and his neighbours.
“It was just parking space that caused the problem. A lady of the opposite house parked in front of my DC’s house and she was told to park properly because of the vehicles passing by and the lady started insulting the DC.
“There was nothing like the issue of maltreatment. Please let’s be careful when people are trying to bring in sentiment.
This is a very small issue that the opposite side would have just walked to the DC and the matter would have been resolved in five minutes,” said the Commandant.
In his narrative, Jacob Akawu explained that the DC’s wife’s coming to his house to discuss the matter with his daughter ended up in hot exchange of words.
He alleged that DC Bello later joined in and in the course of the heated exchange of words said, “he will send people who will finish my family.”
“Not long into the discussion, we heard banging and loud noise at my gate. I rushed to check who it was. On opening the gate, I was pushed back by some angry men in Civil Defence uniform and some of the Officer’s (DC Bello) children,” said Akawu.
He said they eventually arrested and detained his children until the Commandant of the Civil Defence Corps came and ordered their release at about 10:00pm.
Meanwhile, the NSCDC Commandant explained that an Assistance Superintendent of Corps, ASP Bala Yahaya who was involved in manhandling of a member of the public during the festive period had been issued a query for his action which the Corps terms unbecoming.
He ascribed the favourable security situation in Gombe State to the smooth cooperation and strong synergy among the security agencies in the state, which according to him were key to the peaceful celebration of the recent salah in the state.
