Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, NSCDC, yesterday, identified Kura Community in Baruteen Local Government Area of Kwara State as a haven for illegal mining. Also the corps, which raised alarm over the activities of illegal miners in the community, said it has the highest record of unwholesome mining practice in Africa. It disclosed that the affected community under Yahsikira Emirate borders Benin Republic. Besides, the NSCDC also announced that no fewer than three factories involved in illegal activities had been sealed in the last eight months, while some people were arrested for various crimes. State Commandant, NSCDC, Mr Ideba Pedro, disclosed this when he played host to the President of the Kwara Chamber of Commerce, Industry, Mines and Agriculture, KWACCIMA, Alhaji Ahmed Raji, who led members of his executive on an advocacy visit to the command. He alleged that some foreigners conspired with Nigerians in their illicit operation in the area, saying they have already taken over the whole community armed with sophisticated weapons. Pedro regretted that the nation’s economic potential is being taken to foreign countries at the expense of the federal government and its attendant losses. He explained that mining activities rest solely with the federal government, but maintained that states also have a role to play in the sector. “We have heard a lot of complaints about illegal mining activities in Kwara State and if the state government or KWACCIMA can harness these economic potentials, it will be good for the people of the state”, the NSCDC boss said.He urged the state government, KWACCIMA and relevant authorities to look into the act of unlicensed miners operating in the state, particularly in local government areas that border neighboring countries.
