National President of Nigeria Union of Journalists, NUJ, Mr. Waheed Odusile has lamented poor remuneration of media professionals, saying the trend was a major challenge confronting journalism in the country.
Mr. Odusile stated this in Osogbo, at a dinner and award night organised by NUJ, Osun State council, to honour the Chief of Staff to the State Governor, Alhaji Gboyega Oyetola with the award of excellence in public administration.
The president, who was represented by the Vice-President, zone B, Mr Cosmas Oni said government and private owned media organisations in Nigeria must implement media salary scale to improve welfare of media professionals owing to their roles in nation building.
Odusile noted that media was central to the sustainance of the nation’s democratic governance; saying professionals must operate within the ethics of the profession.
Earlier in his welcome speech, the NUJ Chairman in the state, Mr. Biodun Olalere said the Chief of Staff to the governor was selected for the award due to his total commitment and contributions to the development of the state.
Olalere hinted that the Chief of Staff was an administrator per excellence who understands the nitty gritty of human and material resource management.
He maintained that the honour was a well deserved one, considering the love and support the Iragbiji born politician have been giving to the entire NUJ in the state.
While responding, Oyetola who was highly elated in the midst of large numbers of politicians from far and near that followed him to the award venue in Osogbo, the capital of Osun State over the weekend, said the award was a challenge for him to show more commitment to the service to humanity.
Alhaji Oyetola, who expressed joy over the honour done him by the Union of the pen pusher, pledged his unflinching support to the union in all ramifications.
He said government would continue to improve the welfare of media professionals in the state by giving them necessary incentives to enhance their productivity.
Alhaji Oyetola, however charged Journalists in the state not to relent in demonstrating their love and unalloyed support to the Governor Rauf Aregbesola-led administration, saying their complete support cannot be over emphasised towards the development of Osun State as they are partners in progress.
