Nigerian Union of Journalists, NUJ, presidential aspirant in the forthcoming national delegates’ conference billed for this month, Barrister Dele Atunbi has promised to look after the welfare of members if elected into the exalted position.
He made the promise at the weekend when he visited the Bauchi State council of the NUJ in continuation of his campaign.
Atunbi noted that media salary structure, weigh-in allowance, training of members and better condition of service to all journalists working in various media organisations would be his priority once elected as president.
He expressed happiness with the warm reception offered to him by the Bauchi State council of the union, promising to fight against quackery in the profession, and that had it been journalists have better welfare package in their respective working places, he would have no business contesting the number one seat of the union.
“The foundation of democracy was laid with the blood of our colleagues; we need to improve our welfare packages. It’s a pity that a level 13 officer in one of the states I went earns just N50,000; that will not be able to pay school fees of his children. If elected I will do everything possible to improve members’ welfare. Within one year members will witness the most mobile president and deputy president, as well as relocating to Abuja without spending the hard-earned money of the union,” he said.
He stated that many had previously predicted that Nigeria would break in 2015 but as a result of the effort of Nigerian journalists, the country is still united. He then called on delegates from the state to support him at the election to consolidate the achievements of Muhammad Garba’s leadership.
Earlier speaking, the NUJ chairman in the state, Dahiru Garba Muhammad commended the presidential aspirant for paying such visit and described him as one of the best aspirants that can be trusted, as he had contributed a lot towards the progress of the union.
Also speaking, the national ex-officio of the union, Comrade Mukhtar Gidado commended the maturity and professional approach of the aspirant and assured that Bauchi would provide all the necessary support he needed to excel.
