A Chief Nursing Officer attached to the Accident and Emergency, A&E Unit of the Ughelli Central Hospital, on Friday slumped while on duty.
She was said to have slumped while attending to a patient at her unit. The nurse identified as Mrs. Stella Riabelle is the head of the unit. She slumped as a result of fatigue owing to the workload at the A&E.
When newsmen visited the A&E as at 1:40pm on Friday, medical personnel including the Delta State chapter chairman of the National Association of Nigeria Nurses & Midwives, Mr. Egbedi Ejiro were seen battling to resuscitate the victim back to life at the A&E unit.
Though it could not be confirmed if the nurse was ill prior to her slumping, a female colleague at the maternity ward who spoke in confidence said Riabelle has been complaining of too much workload owing to the patients traffic at the unit and the shortage of staff at the unit.
She said: “Owing to the inadequate staffing at the unit, she closes by 6pm from Monday to Friday on humanitarian ground instead of 4pm owing to the workload at the unit.”
