President Nigeria Wrestling
Federation (NWF) Hon.Daniel
Igali yesterday said over 90
athletes will be representing
Nigeria at the African wrestling
championship in few months
time.
The Champion also lauded
Governor Nyesom Wike of
Rivers state, for his support and
zeal to the wrestling federation.
Igali in a media chat with
journalist in Yenagoa, ahead
of the first edition of Africa
Wrestling Championship in Port
Harcourt, said the program will
kick start 7th of February 2018.
He said that, hosting the
Africa Wrestling Championship
in Nigeria is the biggest thing
that have ever happened to the
Federation, lamented that, due
to funding we’ve always find it
difficult to gather our teams.
“Nigeria is hosting and
participating in the tournament,
we have nine national teams that
are participating.
“We have ten each, in each
category, both in women cadet,
free style, and grecoma. We also
have ten participants in junior
female wrestling, totaling 60
athletes that will be participating.
Igali who thanked Rivers State
Governor and the people of
Rivers State for their impressive
support said, “I want to thank
Gov. Wike and the people of
Rivers state, for the enormous
opportunity given to wrestling
federation.
“And from what I have seen
and reports from my men on
ground, the trainee’s has done
exceptionally well, and I think
the wrestling team will do
Nigeria proud.
“I think this is probably the
biggest avenue for the Nigeria
Wrestling Federation in our
history because funding constrain
as most of you know we’ve never
really had opportunity to have
this kind of team ever to have
ten girls from the ages of Ten (15)
to Seventeen (17) years for their
country”.
Igali also revealed that, plans
has been put in place to replace
the aging athletes, “If I was to ask
for anything for this competition,
I think we’ve already have it and
that’s the replacement policy.
“Having this young athletes
some that are so talented means
that in another four to six years
we will have our national team
athlete fully replaced by this by
this athletes.”
Igali who also double as
Chairman House Committee on
Sports in Bayelsa State House
of Assembly, assured Nigerians
that, the wrestling team will make
Nigeria proud at the end of the
African wrestling championship.
“I am very excited, would
like us to win, I will be happy if
everybody give their best efforts
at the end of the day.”
