OSUN AND Kano states have qualified for the semi-finals of the ongoing National Youth Service Corps NYSC, Sports Festival which got underway at the Abuja sports complex, Old parade ground, Area 10 yesterday. In the opening matches, Osun defeated Taraba State by a lone goal which was scored in the second half while Kano beat Bauchi State with the same margin. Eight states from four zones qualified for the games and they are Kano, Bauchi, Osun, Ekiti, Taraba, Bayelsa, Ogun and Kaduna. Apart from football, other sports that would be contested for include volleyball, athletics, and basketball among others. In today’s matches, Ekiti, Bayelsa, Ogun and Kaduna states will battle for the remaining two slots and they will square up against Kano and Osun states in the semi-final. After the two matches yesterday, the NYSC Coordinator in the State of Osun, Mr. Emmanuel Attah that the competition goes beyond fun as it is designed to produce players for Nigeria Professional Football League, NPFL clubs and the Nigeria National League. ‘’Besides, players discovered in the competition could also play in the senior national team, the Super Eagles. This is why we are saying those in charge of our football should look beyond the local leagues and foreign clubs. We can also get players for the senior team from completions like the NYSC sports festival.’’ Attah told Nigerian Pilot Sports that the games is also designed to keep the corps members fit and healthy, creates opportunities for friendship and mutual relationships among corps members and the various state NYSC chapters.
