GOVERNOR Adams Oshiomhole’s action in imposing the gubernatorial candidate of the All Peoples Congress, APC, without recourse to stakeholders from the Edo south senatorial district has been described as the action of a dictator and ‘godfather’. Chairman of the Benin Leaders of Thought, BLT, His Royal Highness, Ovbioba Edun Akenzua, the Enogie of Obazuwa and younger brother to the late Benin Monarch, Oba Erediauwa speaking with newsmen in Benin City, said the actions of the Governor ran foul of the collective resolve of the Benin, who fought against past dictatorial dispositions in the state. ‘’Personally I did not support or like the idea of the governor imposing or picking anybody for the Benin people or Edo south because, it was one of the things we enlisted and requested his alliance to help fight against, what they called godfatherism ‘’. He said, “As at that time, Chief Anenih was the godfather. He was the one appointing people for Edo south; Anytime anybody was to be appointed in Edo south, he has to get the endorsement of Chief Anenih then, before being appointed. We didn’t like that idea”. The Benin Prince said as a people, Edo south or the Benin people are united on this matter and have resolved that at all times, “We must be the one to pick, we don’t want anyone outside Benin to pick for us…I didn’t like that at all. If he had done it with other aspirants of Edo south, my reaction would have been the same.” On Edo state at 25, Prince Akenzua said the naming of a hall in the State House of Assembly Complex after the late nationalist and elder statesman, Chief Anthony Enahoro who hailed from the state is demeaning. It was Enahoro who in 1953 moved the historic motion for Nigeria’s independence, but according to the monarch, Chief Enahoro, more of a national hero and icon deserves to have his name engraved in a national monument.
