Residents of six communities in Ifo Local Government Area of Ogun State yesterday thronged the Oke-Mosan Governor’s office in a peaceful protest against‎ proposed demolition of their houses by the state government.
The protesters who were from Onala, Ilupeju, Unity Estate, Araromi and other communities in Agbado Oke Aro, a border area between Lagos and Ogun State, said they had come to appeal to the state government to have mercy on them and shelf the demolition plans.
‎The state government had, last week given a 7 day ultimatum to residents to vacate the buildings for violating the urban and regional plan law of the state in building the properties.
They were accused of erecting properties on water pipeline and also on right-of-ways.
A 7 day ultimatum given to the residents to vacate the effected buildings lapses today (Tuesday)‎.
According to the spokesperson of the communities, Ademola Olojede, the houses that will be affected is over 2,000 stressing that government should consider their plight since successive government have collected fees from them for ratification under the last administration.
They also appeal to the present administration in the state to use the on-going Home Owners Charter programme to regularize their documents.
Ademola further stated that the residents are victims of land speculators who collected huge sums of money from them 25 years ago after convincing them that the land was safe.
However, in his address to the protesters, the secretary to the state government, SSG, Barr Taiwo Adeoluwa, on behalf of the governor, Senator Ibikunle Amosun said many of the houses in the communities were constructed on water pipeline.
According to him, though the present administration is a compassionate about citizens’ welfare, illegality such as building houses in unauthorized places would not be condoned.
He said, “We have checked with relevant agencies and discovered that most of the houses are on water pipeline. That is wrong. It is against the present effort to set standard for doing things right in our state.
“The governor will never abandon you. That is why a new team will be visiting you soon to see how adjustments can be made.
