Ogun State Independent Electoral Commission, OGSIEC, will on Thursday, April 21 conduct referendum on five of the newly created Local Council Development Areas, LCDA.
Addressing a press conference in Abeokuta, the Ogun State capital, the Chairman of the commission, Alhaja Risikat Ogunfemi, said the referendum followed the directive of the House of Assembly.
It would be recalled that Governor Ibikunle Amosun had proposed the creation of 37 LCDAs.
Ogunfemi explained that five LCDAs will be captured in the exercise because the referendum had earlier been conducted in 32 others.
The affected LCDAs include Afon LCDA with headquarters in Oloka-Afon; Sango/Ijoko LCDA with headquarters in Sango; Abeokuta North East with headquarters in Ita-Iyalode; Ifesowapo LCDA with headquarters in Imodi/Imosan and Coker/Ibogun LCDA with headquarters in Ibogun.
The chairman explained that the exercise which will be conducted between the hours of 9am–3pm will involve all eligible indigenes and residents.
According to her, it will allow the Assembly to complete the process of the creation of the LCDAs.
While promising a hitch-free exercise, she appealed to all stakeholders to conduct themselves properly.
While answering questions from journalists, Ogunfemi explained that the referendum is in line with Section 8(3)(b)(c) of the 1999 Constitution, adding that the rigidity of a proper election would not come to play in the exercise.
She explained that no restriction of movement will be enforced, adding that political parties have no role to play other than mobilising their people to either vote ‘Yes’ or ‘No’.
