No fewer than 15 cases of rape and other sexually-related offences are recorded on weekly basis in Ogun State, according to the Solicitor General and Permanent Secretary in the state Ministry of Justice, Mrs. Adesola Shobayo.
Mrs. Shobayo, who lamented that most of the victims were minors, said the rate at which defilement of minors and other sex related offences were committed had taken a dangerous dimension.
She explained that the best way to curtail the high rate was to review the criminal justice laws, fast track the legal processes and impose of stiffer sanctions on perpetrators in order to deter them from rights’ violation acts.
“I don’t know why rape cases are so common these days; it is fast becoming a big problem in the State. We now record no fewer than 15 cases of rape in a week. The criminal acts are mostly committed against minors.
“My own attitude to these problems is to review our criminal law as it affects defilement and other sexual offences. Also, government at all levels should come up with stiffer punishments so as to deter culprits totally from it,” she stated.
Speaking further on the protection of children rights in the state, the Permanent Secretary informed that the Amended Child Right Law was already being implemented in the state and reiterated that the present administration in the state was doing everything within its capacity to promote, and preserve the rights of children between the ages of one and 18 years.
She explained that Senator Ibikunle Amosun led- administration in the state detested any action that might tend to infringe on the rights and privileges of a child and went on to emphasise that it would not condone any form of violation of the rights of citizens and therefore would not hesitate to wield the big stick on anyone found culpable.
She said the Ministry also provide legal support to indigent people in the society who seek for their services through the Citizens Right Department, CRD, by defending them on any Civil or Criminal issues.
The Solicitor General also pointed out that the Administrator – General and Public Trustees Department, AG&PT, sees to the affairs of people whose breadwinners die interstate without a will.
