Minister of Environment, Mrs Amina Mohammed Alhaji Ibrahim Usman Jibril has said the ministry would give appropriate effect to President Muhammadu Buhari’s directive to clean up Ogoniland within few weeks.
This is contained in a press statement signed and made available to Nigerian Pilot yesterday in Abuja.
It said if the change mantra of Mr. President was to be realised in the environment sector, the ministry must address some critical issues, noting that the key on the agenda was the approval Mr. President gave for the clean-up of Ogoniland within few weeks in the life of his administration.
The statement also revealed that another issue of urgent attention for the environment sector was the presidential directive on the Lake Chad Basin, where the combined consequences of the shrinking Lake Chad, desertification and insurgency had wreaked havoc on the livelihood of the people of that area.
The statement observed that there was need for synergy between the three tiers of government, frontline ministries and all major stakeholders in order to deliver the dividends of change in the sector to all Nigerians
“We expect that the ministers are to partner with states and local governments in the quest to achieve sustainability in the sector,” it stated.
According to it, the goals of the minister and the minister of state should be geared towards fashioning and implementing government’s policies for a healthy environment and sustainable development.
