Governor of Delta State, Senator Ifeanyi Okowa has condemned the recent arrest of some judges in the country by Department of State services, DSS, agents, describing the action as unlawful invasion and infringement of the rights of the judiciary.
Okowa called on authorities concerned to immediately ensure that the matter was handled and dispensed with.
Governor Okowa, who spoke yesterday through his deputy, Barr. Kingsley Otuaro, in a key-note address at a special thanksgiving mass organised by the state Judiciary to mark the beginning of the 2016/2017 legal year in Emmanuel the Saviour Catholic Church, Asaba, assured the judiciary of its independence and his administration’s protection and preservation of its integrity.
Okowa, however, commended the state judiciary for their supportive role to his administration since inception.
While stating that his administration could not commend the judiciary enough for its show of understanding despite the challenging times, Okowa assured that as the dwindling economy of the state improves, the judiciary would be given its pride of place in the scheme of things in the state.
The governor noted that the place of the judiciary as concerned the actualisation of the SMART agenda of his administration could not be over emphasised, stating that prosperity for all Deltans as encapsulated in the SMART agenda could only be attained in an environment of peace and social harmony.
“One of the major components of the SMART agenda is actually to build peace and establishing social harmony and there is no gain saying the fact that the place of the judiciary cannot be over emphasized in establishing social harmony,” he added.
In his sermon at the thanksgiving mass, Bishop of Issele-Uku Diocese, Most Rev. (Dr) Michael Odogwu Elue said the move to commence the new legal year in the house of God, who is just, impartial and incorruptible in the dispensation justice, was an indication that the judiciary was dependent on God in its day to day responsibilities.
He opined that judiciary played a divine role and shared in the divine power of God.
