Unknown to many Nigerian fans, Super Eagles new supremo was physically stunned following last Saturday’s colourless goaless earned by the Taifa Stars of Tanzania over Nigeria in Dare es Salam.
An informed who was in Tanzania hinted Nigerian Pilot Sports that Coach Oliseh did not expect the level of opposition his team got which has now left the Eagles with a huge task of getting a decent against Egypt in Cairo to remain in contention for the 2017 Nations Cup ticket.
“He may not admit it publicly but I can tell you Oliseh didn’t expect what he saw of the Tanzanians. Moreover, his boys let him down, and trust Oliseh, he told them so after the game,’’ said our camp source.
The source confirmed that probably explained why Coach Oliseh pulled out fumbling Haruna Lukman midway into the first half. It has also fuelled speculation that Haruna might have played his last game for the Super Eagles.
Haruna had been in Eagles exile for five years. The Anzhi of Russia star was hauled off after 35 minutes lackluster performance for Sylvester Igboun.
Emmanuel Emenike who again fired blanks in his Eagles recall may have also played his last for the senior national team if feelers from Eagles camp are to be taken seriously.
Speaking after the game, Oliseh promised to work on the mistakes he noticed in his team in subsequent matches.
“We only had two days to train together and I am impressed with the way we played even though the striking was blunt but I am optimistic we will work on those mistakes step by step”
“Our midfield was not covered properly that is why I decided to do some early changes but I don’t want to point at any players,” said Oliseh.
On keeper Ikeme’s performance Oliseh was full of praise for the Wolverhampton keeper “I am very happy with Ikeme’s performance he was brilliant and he kept the Tanzanian strikers at bay, It was a very important debut for him and thankfully for us he was A1.”
Prodded to explain why he decided to replace Haruna Lukman very early in the game and the long time effect on the player Oliseh was diplomatic in his answer
“Things did not work as planned that’s why I decided to make the change but I don’t want to be negative because I will have time to talk to the player and see how we can correct mistakes we saw but If we hadn’t made that early change,” he stressed “we would have lost.”.
