Irked by the electrocution of the Unilag female student, Miss Oluchi Anakwe in Lagos, Wednesday, Hon. Dame Nkechi Omeje-Ogbu of the Enugu State House of Assembly, has called on landlords not to build near or under high tension cables.
Omeje, who is the House Committee Chairman on Gender Affairs, gave the advice on the floor of the House, Thursday during debate on a motion.
He said a repeat of the fatal incident can only be averted if landlords stop building without due consideration of their environment.
Omeje, who also spoke scathingly about street trading in Nigeria especially as it concerns Enugu State, listed the dangers inherent in hawking adding that whatever gains hawkers made pale into insignificance when one considers the danger therein.
She frowned at the way and manner hawkers meandering into every nook and crannies in Enugu metropolis including entering Government House, Lion Building to hawk their wares.
She regretted that the resolution passed by the House sometime ago against street hawking has not yielded any positive result.
The lawmaker, therefore, charged government agencies especially the Enugu Capital Territory Development Authority, to look into the menace of street hawking in the metropolis with a view to curbing it.
