SOCIAL Democratic Party, SDP, government in Ondo State will place salary of civil servants on the first line charge, according to its governorship candidate, Dr. Olu Agunloye. The move, according to the candidate, will ensure that salaries are not only paid promptly, but put an end to the lingering problem of government’s indebtedness to public workers for several months. Dr. Agunloye, who expressed sympathy with civil servants across the state who are being owed nine months salary arrears, said payment of salaries will be one of his administration’s priorities if the electorate give him the mandate to steer the ship of the state in November when the governorship election will be held.
Speaking when he visited the SDP national secretariat in Abuja, the former Minister of Steel and Power and lecturer, asserted that the Ondo state economy was in limbo and in need of quick fix to stop further plunge. “We shall make the payment of salaries and pension a priority. To do this, we shall place the salary of civil servants on the first line charge to ensure that they are paid as at when due. We intend to do this because we are pained by the level of poverty on the land. “We want to alleviate the poverty on the land, boost the purchasing capacity of the people by ensuring that their salaries are paid promptly thereby assisting them to meet the basic needs of their families. “The people, who are mostly civil servants, are suffering and, of course, whatever affects them has considerable impact on the
lives of others largely because these civil servants have many dependants,” he said. Stressing that lack of focused planning and the will to effect positive change in the lives of the people were the reasons government has failed to affect them positively. The former Corps Marshal of the Federal Road Safety Corps, FRSC, lamented that in spite of collecting over N1 trillion from the federation account in the past eight years, there is little or nothing to show for the huge revenue the state earned from its share of the national coffer. “We intend to adopt a three- prong approach to enliven the economic development of the state. Primarily, we shall adopt the Appropriate Debt Management, ADM, to gradually offset the huge debts the state is burdened with now, then boost production and development through Economic Centred Agenda-ECA- which will largely incorporate private sector bail in and out of the ailing economy. “Finally, we shall ginger the state Internally Generated Revenue, IGR, by advancing a better approach to re-jig the economy by introducing Service Generating Revenue-SGR, and open up the state for investors to come in and partner with us in our development efforts,” Agunloye emphasised. The SDP administration, when elected into office in November, will invest in people as well as tap into the vast rich mineral resources available in the state, noting that with his past record of achievement and the fact that he has credibility, integrity and capacity to build human and structural infrastructures he can be relied upon to make the difference in their lives.
