Mobile policemen under the Nigerian Police Command in Rivers State, and some Navy ratings, yesterday clashed in Port Harcourt, the Rivers State capital, that left one naval official injured.
This is not the first time Navy ratings and policemen would clash in Rivers State.
Nigerian Pilot gathered that there was pandemonium among commuters around the Mummy B Road/GRA Junction area, where the scene occurred as both groups of the security operatives battled for supremacy.
Nigerian Pilot also gathered that the incident, which occurred around 6.30pm yesterday left one Navy operative injured.
An eyewitness told Nigerian Pilot that trouble started when some navy men, who were held in a traffic jam around the Mummy B Road due to the ever-busy GRA junction wanted to clear the way for their vehicle to pass through without further delay.
It would be noted also that security operatives are always in the habit of not obeying traffic rules, especially in the Port Harcourt metropolis.
According to the eyewitness, the naval operatives, on getting to the junction, met a group of Mobile policemen, who were controlling the traffic.
The eyewitness further stated that while the navy personnel tried to join in the control of the traffic, the Mobile policemen told them not to worry.
“There was blood everywhere around that point. But I believe the person that was shot must have been rushed to the hospital,” the eyewitness added.
When contacted, the State Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Ahmad Muhammad, confirmed the incident, but quickly added that the matter had been resolved and that there was no casualty
Also, the Public Relations Officer, Nigerian Navy Ship Pathfinder, Lt.-Cdr. Hammad Ahmed, said he had not been fully briefed on the matter, and promised to speak when he has been briefed.
