MINISTER of Science and
Technology, Dr. Ogbonnaya Onu has
formally inaugurated the Nigerian
Institute of Leather and Science
Technology, NILEST, North-Central
Regional Leather Research and
Development Cluster Extension
Centre and commissioned leather
training infrastructure.
In his speech, Onu said that leather
technology was important for any
nation that desired to attain enduring
He said that it was important that
steps were taken to promote leather
technology in the country so as to
quicken Nigeria’s industrialisation
process, adding that virtually all
Nigerians use leather products
such as bags, belts, shoes, slippers,
furniture and among other.
“By doing this, we will also
strengthen our capacity to convert
our rich agricultural products into
viable economic goods and services
that we need for both domestic
consumption as well as to strengthen
export earnings. This will help in
both job and wealth creation, help
restore national self-reliance and selfconfidence,
enhance prosperity and
boost our economy,” said Onu
The Minister said that Ministry of
Science and Technology is resolute
in its determination to utilize science,
technology and innovation to lay
a solid foundation for Nigeria’s
economic diversification.
He said the present administration
is committed to move the nation’s
economy to resource based to
knowledge based and innovation
driven, which is needed to lay a solid
Onu explained that to achieve the
aim of the present administration,
his ministry will create additional
Leather Research and Development
Extension Centres in other geopolitical
zones of the country where
non currently exist.
He therefore urged the trainees
of the institute to take the vocation
Speaking also, the Minister Federal
Capital Territory, Muhammad Musa
Bello said that Leather is Nigeria’s
second highest revenue source after
oil, adding that there is the need to
diversify into Leather Value Chain,
Bello who said that the training
was designed for prospective
entrepreneurs on the basic theory and
practice of footwear manufacture,
leather manufacture or Hides and
Skin improvement, also advised
the participants to take the course
