After banging in two goals when Super Falcons demolished their Malian counterpart 8-0 in the return leg of the only All Africa Games, AAG qualifier in Abuja at the weekend, France-based Striker Desire Oparanozie has boasted that his teammates have the quality to confront any other side when this year’s Women World Cup gets underway as from June 8 in Canada.
Nigeria’s Super Falcons will be one of the eight teams to take part in the Women’s Football Tournament of the 11th All-Africa Games, in Congo-Brazzavile in September this year.
Before then, Nigeria would be among African teams expected to confront other female global football powerhouse Sweden, USA at the group stage of 2015 Women World Cup.
The tournament which was first staged in 1991 has Germany and United States as the most successful sides with two trophies to their kitty. Nigeria have always been caged at first phase of most prestigious female soccer fiesta.
Despite European and American long dominance with no African team yet to edge close in Women round-leather soccer, Oparanozie whose combination with rising star Asisat Oshoala proved superb against Mali on Friday though with flurry of scoring chances missed assured “I think we are getting better by the day.
“For the previous world cup, I think Nigeria always come out from group stage but with the kind of preparation we have and kind of quality players we have in the team, I believe Super Falcons is going to achieve more. We are going to pass the groupalthough we are not talking about winning the world cup yet but there is nothing impossible in football.
For Head Coach Edwin Okon “How you rate Germany that is how they rate Nigeria. I don’t see them so spectacular or fantastic,.it’s going to be 11 players against 11 players when we meet at the world stage.
“We are not yet there, we are still work in progress, we predicted five goals against Mali during the qualifier and we got eight goals. I think we doing this to see ourselves in a bigger stage. With the way we played today, my technical crew and I are still work in progress until we are there.”
