Oduduwa Peoples’ Congress, OPC, will resist attempts by sundry elements to demean the Yoruba people and culture in terms of appointments into political offices and imposition of alien cultures.
The socio-cultural group said it remains committed to the fight against any form of oppression against Yoruba race stressing that it would ensure that people of extraction are accorded their desired positions in the political land space of Nigeria.
In what appears to be a cautious cry against relegating the Yorubas to the background in the appointment of ministers into President Muhammadu Buhari’s cabinet, the Governor of the Congress in Osun State, Alhaji Adeleke Akintayo, a.k.a Olojongbodu, said the group has vowed to openly resist efforts to undermine the interests of the Yoruba race in the present dispensation.
It also said the congress is keen to ensure the liberation of the Yoruba race from political intimidation adding that though it will work to promote peaceful co-existence of the different ethnic groups in Nigeria, this though should not be to the detriment of the Yoruba nation.
Further, Alhaji Akintayo said the congress would continue to promote culture and traditions of Yorubas, saying that culture remains the symbol of identity of any nation.
The Osun OPC governor, who decried the attitude of some Yoruba’s to their culture, emphasised the need for them to place value on their culture and traditions at all times.
While speaking on the recent resolution of the age long crisis between the two factional leaders of OPC, Alhaji Akintayo hinted that the crisis had been resolved and congress remains one body worldwide.
He explained that the congress was working assiduously to fish out bad eggs within the congress, saying the congress would not condoled any act that could soiled the image of OPC.
The OPC governor, who called on Nigerians to change their perception about the congress, said the congress would continue to champion the course of Yoruba’s at any point in time.
Alhaji Akintayo, who commended the state governor, Mr. Rauf Aregbesola for his efforts to the protection of life and property in the state, urged the government to support the congress with necessary facilities to boost its performance.
He called on the people of the state to report any criminal activities to any of his members around them or any Police station closer to them as they are working in collaboration with the Nigeria Police Force.
