Ahead of today’s departure of the country’s U-23 football side, Dream Team from Banjul, Gambia for the CAF U-23 Africa Cup of Nations in Senegal, FIFA U-17 top scorer, Victor Osimhen has been made a late replacement for Granada striker Isaac Success.
Success was originally listed on the final squad submitted and Nigeria may now have to pay a fine to the Confederation of African Football (CAF) for this late change.
Osimhen was top scorer at the FIFA U-17 World Cup in Chile with 10 goals and sources have suggested a top NFF official was behind his inclusion particularly as coach Samson Siasia could not guarantee the availability of Success, who has established himself at struggling La Liga side Granada.
Osimhen is reportedly a target of several top European clubs with his agent saying Arsenal have shown the most interest thus far.
Meanwhile, according to the secretary of the team, Sirajo Hassan, the delegation to Senegal made up of 23 players, 10 accompanying officials will depart the Banjul International Airport at about 11pm aboard Arik Airline for the thirty minutes flight to Dakar.
The team is expected to play its last friendly game against the Gambian U-20 side, the Baby Scorpions today by 4pm (5.00pm Nigerian time), before departing.
The team on arrival in Dakar, will then proceed to Mbour, venue of its first 2 group B games.
The Dream Team VI will begin their quest to qualify for the Rio Olympics when they take on West African rivals Mali on Sunday 29th November at the Caroline Faye Stadium, in Mbour.
