Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Rt. Hon Yusuf Sulaimon Lasun has described has unfortunate the stamped that occurred in Mecca, which claimed the lives of over 717 persons taking part in pilgrimage.
This was disclosed in a press statement made available to newsmen in Osogbo, Osun State, by the chief press secretary to the deputy speaker, Wole Oladimeji.
The stampede, according to Saudi officials, occurred near the Islamic holy city of Mecca.
He expressed concern that over 863 people were injured in the incident at Mina, which occurred as two million pilgrims were taking part in the hajj’s last major rite.
He prayed to Almighty Allah to grant the families of the affected pilgrims the fortitude to bear the loss.
It would be recalled that the ugly incident occurred when pilgrims were converged on Mina to throw stones at pillars representing the devil.
It would also be recalled that preparations for this year’s hajj were marred when a crane collapsed at Mecca’s Grand Mosque this month, killing 109.
It is the deadliest incident to occur during the hajj in 25 years.
Pilgrims travel to Mina, a large valley about 5km (three miles) from Mecca, during the Hajj to throw seven stones at pillars called Jamarat, which represent the devil.
