A former Director General of Securities and Exchange Commission, SEC, Ms Arunma Oteh, has said that Nigerians should embrace investment opportunities in the country.
Oteh gave the advice at the 2015 Genevieve Gathering, an empowerment gathering of industry experts and aspiring business men and women, organised by Genevieve Magazine in Lagos.
She said that investment opportunities were enormous in the country in spite of the various challenges.
Speaking on the theme, ‘Becoming financially fearless’, Oteh said that the country could only overcome its challenges by raising financially fearless citizens.
Oteh said that Nigerians should tap into the enormous opportunities by increasing their investment tentacles and stop focusing on challenges in the country.
“Whenever there are challenges, there are lots of opportunities and Nigerians should learn to evaluate these challenges to translate into good investment opportunities.
“There are obstacles in life, but we should not be worried about them, we should focus on possibilities,”Oteh said.
She said that there were many services which investors could provide because of the country’s large population and growing middle class.
Oteh said that Nigerians should tap into investment opportunities being offered by different sectors of the economy in agriculture, education, oil and gas as well as in information and communication technology, among others.
She advised that Nigerians, especially women, should make money to be their servant and not their master by being financially secured.
Oteh said that Nigerian women needed to be economically empowered to bring up good children to develop the country.
Mrs. Betty Irabor, the Chief Executive Officer and Editor-In-Chief, Genevieve Magazine, said that the aim of the workshop was to empower women and men to tackle business and financial issues specific to them.
“Genevieve Gathering, an offshoot of Genevieve Magazine, is a forum for likeminded individuals, entrepreneurs and business women and men to discuss topical issues and share success story”.
Mrs. Nimi Akinkugbe, the Chief Executive Officer, Best Man Games Ltd., advised women on personal finance and financial planning.
Akinkugbe said that women played important roles in economic development all over the world and Nigerian women should not be an exception.
She said that financial planning helped to hedge against shocks and to ensure financial stability.
Akinkugbe said Nigerians should learn to diversify their investments and avoid putting all their eggs in one basket.
