Outrage, as gunmen kidnap 3 women, teenager in Kaduna

News of the abduction of three women, a teenager and a man yesterday by unidentified gunmen in Narayi community near Kabala West in Kaduna metropolis yesterday sparked off heavy protest by youths of the area.

The incident occurred at about 1a.m on Sunday according to an eye witness.

A resident, Abubakar Ladan alleged that the gunmen stormed Nariya community near Kabala west and kidnapped the people, leading to the blockage of the by-pass by the protesting youth along Nnamdi Azikiwe expressway.

The state Police Command Public Relations Officer, DSP Yakubu Sabo, who confirmed the incident said when the incident was reported to the Divisional Police Officer, DPO of the area, he lead a team of personnel to the area for rescue.

“When they went there, the suspected kidnappers had ran away. Instead of the people to give police cooperation to see how to address the issue, they decided to protest and block the highway”, he said.

He explained that blocking of a highway was wrong because “this highway is connecting many states of the federation”.

“When you are expressing your grievances, you must not tamper with the rights of others.

“They went to Police Station and protested and attempted to burn it”, he explained.

Speaking further, Sabo said in spite of all measures to pacify them, to understand the civil obligation on them, they refused.

He added that to ensure public order and safety, “we used minimum force to disperse them.”

“They decided to stone the security agencies, apart from lamentation and insults”, he added.

He disclosed that the ring leader of the protest had been arrested, and law and order has been restored in the area.

The residents protested against alleged police delay and inaction while the incident was happening.

It would be recalled that the state Police Command declared Kaduna safe of kidnappers barely a week ago after consistent raid on Abuja-Kaduna Highway in an attempt to curb the menace.
