Oyedeji slams NBBF over domestic league neglect

Former national men’s basketball captain, Olumide Oyedeji has chided the Nigeria Basketball Federation NBBF over the delay in commencement of the 2019 Nigerian basketball league season.

The NBBF held its Annual General Congress in Abuja last month but has not lived to its pledge that the league will commence in the last week of April.

Oyedeji speaking in a chat with journalists said the delay has kept players inactive and idle and the coaches, technical officials and the fans are not better for it.

He said no local players as a result of inactivity will have justification to even be considered for national team assignments after having been out of action for long.

“It is very disheartening, are they telling us that it is a crime to be a players at home, they are telling you there is no future for any basketball player playing at home and probably they are just concerned about themselves.

Everybody has been asking me the question when is the league going to start because even the league that we started, they use Government officials to threaten the sponsors which comes mostly at the detriment of all connected to the game which deprived them of earnings.”

Last year the female basketball league was collapsed with the league played in an abridged fashion and Olumide said it should not be so.

The NBBF in communication with FIBA now have the world cup in China to plan for, as well as the Afro challenge for men and women, the All Africa games and Olympic qualifiers which puts into serious doubts.
