Police in Ogun State and men of the state Command of Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, NSCDC, yesterday rescued a nine year old boy, Korede Taiwo, his who was chained by his biological father for more than a month on allegation of stealing father’s money and stepmother’s soup.
In separate statements made available to newsmen in Abeokuta, the Ogun State capital, the security agents revealed that the boy was chained by his father, Pastor Taiwo Francis, who is the founder and pastor of The Key of Joy Celestial Church in Ajibawo area of Ado-Odo/Ota area of the state.
The Police Public Relations Officer of the Command, Prince Muyiwa Adejobi, said the boy was chained on his neck to a heavy log of wood and locked in a room inside the church.
Adejobi said, the police and men of the NSCDC rescued the boy following a tip off from members of the community.
He added that Korede’s stepmother, Kehinde Taiwo, who is cooling her heels in police custody, justified the inhuman treatment by alleging that the boy has the tendency to steal.
According to the PPRO, a Superintendent of Police, the Assistant Inspector General of Police in charge of zone 2 Command Lagos, who is presently overseeing the Command, Abdulmajid Ali has ordered a thorough investigation into the matter while directing that the boy be given adequate medical attention.
The Police also said that the boy would soon be handed over to the state Ministry of Women Affairs and Social Development in the state for further care.
The NSCDC, according to the statement signed by its Public Relations Officer, Kareem Olanrewaju, said that the boy was pale and malnourished when he was rescued.
Olanrewaju further said that there was an initial resistance by members of the church led by the Pastor’s wife but that the officers had to force their way into the premises where the boy was chained down.
The statement also read, “The nine year old boy named Korede Taiwo was being alleged of stealing, especially of soup from their cooking pot by his step mother named kehinde. She reported to the Father who took step by chaining his hand and legs.”
Olanrewaju stressed that the boy and his stepmother were handed over to the police for prosecution while the father was reported to have escaped during the resistance.
“In the course of resistance by the step mother kehinde and others when the NSCDC officials got to the church, the father Taiwo, who is also the Pastor of the church escaped. All this information has been relayed to the police to assist them in their subsequent investigation.”
